While studying the Psalms of Ascent several years ago I was struck by something the teacher said, “Many of them have been like fountains of living Water to this road-weary traveler who detoured too many times into the ditch on her way to Mount Zion. That He still bid me ‘Come!’ is a grace gift beyond comprehension.” When swallowed by guilt over past transgressions, it reminded me that while I should not presume upon God’s pardoning mercy, I am completely forgiven through His Son’s atonement. He has blotted out ALL of my iniquities and I am eternally grateful that He remembers them no more.

Roundup: April & May Scriptures & NEW Word Art

For our Scripture Challenge at Scrapbook-Elements we recently used a series of Biblical texts based on the topic of REPENTANCE, followed by GOD'S FORGIVENESS, and then we touched on the subject of FORGIVING EACH OTHER. (At the moment we are focusing our attention on the theme of RESTORATION and RECONCILIATION.)

Our natural inclination is to "stand up for our rights" and lash out in retaliation whenever we feel wronged or unjustly accused. Many times we are tempted to work things out for ourselves, instead of TRUSTING GOD. Other times we are filled with SELF-PITY. Our mistreatment at the hands of others allows us to identify more closely with Christ (for example, in Isaiah's image of the Suffering Servant). Even when it seems to go against our nature, we are called to forgive each other. Yes, it is very hard most of the time, but we make this choice not only out of obedience, but also from a THANKFUL heart of being forgiven ourselves by 'n merciful Father, through faith in the atonement of Christ. Charles Spurgeon said: “To be forgiven is such sweetness that honey is tasteless in comparison with it. But yet there is one thing sweeter still, and that is to forgive. As it is more blessed to give than to receive, so to forgive rises a stage higher in experience than to be forgiven”. And Corrie Ten Boom reminded us that “Forgiveness is the key that unlocks the door of resentment and the handcuffs of hate. It is the power that breaks the chains of bitterness and the shackles of selfishness.”

Coming up for air! A 5-month recap of Scripture Challenges

Hello world! It's been 5 (!!) months since my last blog post... Many of you have contacted with me concerns if I was OK and wondering what had happened to me - thank you very much for your interest in my well-being. You may have noticed that I haven't been designing as prolifically as I had been before or been as active in the community forums or galleries. In fact, I have been absent from the whole scrapbooking realm for quite some time, just popping my head in and out ever so briefly now and then. I can happily assure you that all is well - my absence has mostly to do with priorities and a lack of time.

First of all was passing the 10th Grade. No, not me (although I too have learned a LOT this past year!), but assisting my son - who has autism - in his schoolwork daily. That is where the majority of my 24 hours each day have gone. It has most often been an uphill struggle with many tears and frustrations, but I am happy to say that "we" have passed all our requirements this year. Summer vacation and rest have finally arrived - phew!

Secondly, for the past several months I have been immersed in studies. Perhaps all those study sessions with my son have dusted off some of my own cerebral cobwebs, as I find immense enjoyment and fulfillment in learning. You will often find me burning the midnight candle into the wee hours of the morning, thoroughly engrossed in a book or lecture (why, oh why, could I not muster up that same enthusiasm while I was in high school or university??). I continue to sit at the feet of some extremely gifted teachers and realize I still have years and years ahead of me to even remotely reach their level of understanding.

Although I haven't been designing as much as before, I have added a couple of products to my store in drips and drabs. For those of you who are interested, you can take a look at what's new HERE.

The one thing, however, to which I have remained committed is SBE's weekly Scripture Challenge. I have been hosting this challenge since 2007 (with an occasional break in-between), aided by the generosity, support and assistance of the Royal Muses.

The Scripture Challenge is something that has given me great joy over the years and something I endeavor to continue as long as I am able. From a creative point of view, I really enjoy putting together the word art for you in an expressive and decorative way. It also gives me a lot of pleasure to share them with you each week as a free download in the FORUM. Seeing all the creative ways you have applied the word art as you share your work with the rest of us in the GALLERY is tremendously inspiring.

But the one thing that gives me the greatest fulfillment are the messages you have sent me, telling of the many ways in which the Word of God has touched your life and provided encouragement during difficult times. It continues to amaze me how often I have been told that the verse for the week what precisely what somebody needed to hear at that particular time of their life. I honestly believe Our Father has compassion on His children and reaches out to them in many different ways, even in something as small or seemingly insignificant as an online scrapbooking challenge!

A new challenge is posted every Sunday, where you are welcome to download that week's scripture word art for FREE. Come back regularly to see what's new, as the download link is only active for one week at a time (after about 4 weeks, the previous word art is bundled up and available for sale in the STORE as collections of "Scripture Scraps").

As a gift for a special friend, I recently collected all the scripture cards I had made over the years (more than 100 of them!) and printed them out as standard 4x6 photos. I found a beautiful embossed leather photo album which has room for 200 photos:

The album displays 4 photos/cards at a time, so I slid them into the protective acid-free sleeves. I tried to group the cards by theme. There's room enough in the album for more cards as we go along. Here is just a quick snapshot of some of the pages:

You may use the digital word art in a variety of ways, for example as cards for scripture memorization, scrapbook pages, bookmarks, wall hangings, etc. If you would like to show us what your finished creation looks like, you may upload a web-sized version to our GALLERY. I am very indebted to them for their continuous assistance!

Over the course of the past few years we have covered a variety of Biblical subjects such as: God's glory, abundance, compassion, obedience, faithfulness, purpose, kindness, protection, refuge, hope and trust, gratitude, learning, etc. We then started off 2010 by reminding ourselves of the infallible Word of God, that Scripture is inspired ("breathed out") by God himself. Although memorizing scripture has many advantages as we grow in grace and knowledge, it also has its dangers and pitfalls. When taking part in our Scripture Challenge, I would encourage you never to take any one of these verses in isolation, but to always place it into context with the rest of the passage and the overall message of redemption in the Bible. We humans, as finite beings, may often misinterpret Scripture, taking it out of context or applying our own presuppositions to its meaning, but God's Word itself is inerrant and truthful. It would reward you to do a thorough exegesis of each verse and to meditate on its meaning in order to come to a fuller understanding.

Since I haven't updated the blog in such a long time, I would like to share some of the scrapbook pages I created this year with the scriptures we were studying. Each of these pages was made with love for those people that I love (my parents, grandparents, children, friends, teachers, etc). For the sake of brevity and not making this post any longer long and more tiresome to read than it already is (!), I am only posting the pages themselves, instead of expounding too much on their specific meaning to me personally.

"Man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD" - Deuteronomy 8:3

"All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness." - 2 Timothy 3:16

"For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit." - 2 Peter 1:21

"For the Word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword." - Hebrews 4:12

After this series of challenges was completed, these four scriptures were bundled together for you and are available for purchase as "Scripture Scraps #24":

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away." - Matthew 24:35

"The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only." - John 1:14

"So is my Word that goes out from my mouth: it will not return to me empty." - Isaiah 55:11a

"This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words." - 1 Corinthians 2:13

During the next few weeks we covered some verses which aided us in getting to know the God of Scripture. This is not an exhaustive list of all of His attributes (many of which we already dealt with in previous challenges over the years, including His holiness, compassion, protection, faithfulness, etc), but just a small sampling of how God reveals Himself to us, both in nature and through His word:

"Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit." - Psalm 147:5

"For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities - his eternal power and divine nature - have been clearly seen." - Romans 1:20

"He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just." - Deuteronomy 32:4

"Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth." - Isaiah 40:28

After this series of challenges was completed, these four scriptures were bundled together for you and are available for purchase as "Scripture Scraps #26":

We then continued with 4 more scriptures relating to the nature and character of God and how we come to know Him:

"The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love, and forgiving sin and rebellion." - Numbers 14:18

" 'I am the Alpha and the Omega', says the Lord God, 'who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.' " - Revelation 1:8

"My ears had heard of you but now my eyes have seen you." - Job 42:5

"For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything." - 1 John 3:20

Much more could have been said about who God is and how He makes Himself known, but for the next series of challenges I felt the need to focus on the JOY we having in knowing God:

"You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence." - Psalm 16:11

"Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days." - Psalm 90:14

"Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. " - Psalm 51:12

"Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs." - Psalm 100:2

2010 Scripture Challenge: week 1 (Jan 31- Feb 6)

I hope you have all rested and are eager to get back into the swing of things by delving into many wonderful verses found in scripture! Scrapbook-Elements has just started a brand new series for 2010. During our first challenges we will be looking at the Word of God as revealed in scripture, so the verse for Week 1 comes from the first part of Hebrews 4:12 which says:
